Sumphonia

--composition and publication of congregational hymns--

Workshops

Sumphonia holds workshops on hymn writing. The first workshop was held in 1997 on the University of Missouri campus. In 1998, the workshop was integrated into RJ Stevens' Singing School in Oklahoma. In 2013, it returned to Missouri and has remained there since.

The workshop demonstrates a method for writing high quality, publishable hymns. The first day is devoted to learning the rules of writing, and the final days are devoted to practice. Each person enrolled is required to write one good verse during the week; a good verse is one that would be published in a hymnal and outlive the author. The workshop addresses hymn tunes and music only on a limited basis.
